A variety of nutritionals professionals are joining the bandwagon and are touting the health benefits of organic foods.  </p>
<h2 id="toc-what-does-organic-mean">What does organic mean?</h2>
<p>Up until the use of chemicals on food, it was all grown organically.  The term “organic” can be somewhat misleading; however, since food is carbon-based and is actually chemically organic.  However, today, the term organic refers to food that has been produced without the use of man-made chemicals such as pesticides, artificial fertilizers or additives, herbicides or genetically modified organisms known as GMO.  And, in the case of organic meats, it refers to a lack of use of growth hormones or antibiotics.  </p>
<h2 id="toc-definition-of-organic-food">Definition of <i>organic food</i></h2>
<p>Foods that have been certified organic have been determined to be free of chemicals, which include additives or preservatives, during the growth and packaging phases.  Basically, any food that is 70 percent natural can have an organic label.  Or, defined via the bigger picture: <u>Organic food</u> utilizes a system based on a foundation of ecological balance between the human care given to animals and plants and nature.</p>

<h2 id="toc-how-nutritious-is-organic-food">How nutritious is organic food?</h2>
<p>A number of studies, including the <u>2001 study by nutrition expert Virginia Worthington</u>, have compared the level of nutrition contained in organic foods vs. the nutrition found in fruits, grains and vegetables that have been conventionally grown.  Her review of these studies have found that <strong>organic food offers a higher level of nutrition especially pertaining to vitamin C, iron, magnesium and phosphorus</strong>, 17 , 21, 29 and 13.6 percent respectively than their conventional counterparts. </p>
<p>Her findings indicate that both male and female receive the daily recommended amount of vitamin C by eating five servings of organic vegetables.  This same finding indicated that this was not the case when conventional vegetables were consumed.  And, today additional studies have backed these findings.  But, it should be noted that there are also a number of studies that conclude no nutritional difference exists between the two.  While nutrition is important, the point actually revolves around the use of toxic insecticides, pesticides and chemicals in general that are used during conventional growth.  </p>
<p>In addition to the health benefits of eating organic is the consideration of the effect these chemicals is having on the planet overall.  This alone should be an incentive to switching to more organic foods.  As the movement continues to grow, organic products are becoming more readily available and common in a larger percentage of grocery outlets.  But, the first thing you need to keep in mind is that there is no single factor that will successfully help you lose weight.  Instead, it is a combination of factors that will help you lose weight and keep it off permanently like:</p>

<li>Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet (preferably organic) that contains the minerals, vitamins and nutrients your body needs.</li>
<li>Maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.</li>

<p>This is the first mistake most people tend to make.  They want to lose weight and they want to do it quickly so they pick the most stringent plan they can find and they usually end up in failure.  Take a minute to review a dietary plan to be sure it’s one you can follow.  If you feel it is too strict, make another selection.   </p>
<h2 id="toc-be-realistic">Be realistic.</h2>
<p>Keep your expectations on an even keel and don’t expect overnight results.  When determining how much weight you want to lose celebrate small losses, but keep your final goal in mind.  If someone tells you they have lost a great deal of weight in a relatively short period of time, don’t try to copy their results or timeframe.  Every person is different. </p>
<h2 id="toc-dont-make-going-to-the-gym-an-everyday-occurrence">Don’t make going to the gym an everyday occurrence.</h2>
<p>During any weight loss program most people are enthusiastic and decide they have to go to the gym on a daily basis.  This may actually cause more harm than good since your body needs some healing time after each workout.  Hitting the gym everyday only hinders the process.  Most people get overzealous, workout everyday and eventually lose interest and stop going.  This is typically true of individuals who have been leading a sedentary lifestyle. </p>

<p>Use all your senses, including your head.  If you want to have a clear understanding of how much you are eating, jot it down in a notebook and then take the time to review the list and eliminate anything that is detrimental.  Sometimes you get hungry and you reach for the first thing you see whether it’s on your plan or not.  Be realistic and use common sense. <p>Most people believe that cravings stem from a lack of will power or from bad eating habits.  But, in reality nothing could be farther from the truth.  Most cravings are based on something your body needs and to keep cravings in their place it’s important to understand what causes them.  </p>

<p>The insulin triggers the body’s cells to take glucose out of the bloodstream for use if needed.  When the body becomes resistant to insulin, the signal is ignored and the cells fail to take action.  The body panics, sends out a distress signal for additional carbs and sugar and the brain responds with a craving.  This causes an intake of an excessive amount of calories that eventually become fat and you end up putting on additional weight even though you might be consuming less food. </p>
<p>If you have a clear understanding of what causes cravings you are in a position to keep them under control.  It might take a little practice and time, but it is possible. </p>
